I was asked recently by a blogger trying to get started (Paul at elderstribune.com) to contribute to that site. Initially he wanted me to switch from my blogging home at wordpress to whatever he’s using. It’s very difficult to get people of a certain age to be comfortable online. I’ve been fighting this resistance since around 1999 when I set up a website for the historic Spring Mountain Ranch State Park in Blue Diamond, NV where I was a docent. You would have thought I was trying to lead them to slaughter. From friends my age I sense that most are still very internet-phobic; clicking on anything scares them to death. I find they love to know new things online but they’re afraid they’re opening themselves up to all kinds of danger if they comment, especially if they have to register, and contrary to some of the blogs I’ve done might indicate, I’m very non-pushy and wouldn’t dream of making people do anything they feel uncomfortable with. So I try to remember that most, if not all of us, have come into the web experience fairly recently. I remember how afraid I was when I started venturing out there. So I don’t know what the answers are. Just time I guess. And education. And people like us to lead the way, as egotistical as that might sound!
